Vocabulary and Lexical Studies (VOC)
This strand features research that examines how vocabulary is acquired, processed, and used by first-language, second-language, and multilingual speakers. It includes all research where the focus is vocabulary and its interaction with learners, teachers, testers, syllabus designers, materials writers, and policy makers. Example topics include (but are not limited to): descriptions of the nature of the vocabulary input learners receive and the output they produce; studies into the effectiveness of both explicit teaching approaches and incidental learning from exposure; vocabulary assessment; the mental lexicon and processing of vocabulary; formulaic language; developing fluency with lexical items; and principled approaches to incorporating vocabulary into teaching materials.
