AAAL Executive Committee Solidarity Statement for the People of Iran

The American Association for Applied Linguistics stands in solidarity with the people of Iran who are demanding fundamental rights of women and freedom from violence and oppression. We are deeply affected by the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini while in the custody of Iranian police for not following the code imposed on women, and by the killing of increasing number of protesters. 

Furthermore, we are deeply troubled by the blockage or interference of the communication channels that provide access to free flow of factual information in connection to the death of Mahsa Amini and the protests in reaction to the incident.

AAAL reaffirms its commitment to the freedom of speech, the protection of all human rights, and the advancement of peace and social justice that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
