Text Analysis, Written Discourse (TXT)
This strand features presentations that report analyses of written discourse underpinned by various theoretical approaches, for example, genre, systemic-functional linguistics (SFL), rhetorical structure theory (RST), critical discourse analysis (CDA), and theories of argumentation. Analyses should be qualitative in nature and may involve an analysis of whole texts or text segments, or a fine-grained follow-up analysis of corpus-derived quantitative data. Texts analyzed could include (but are not limited to) student and expert academic writing; professional, workplace writing; multimodal texts; and literary texts. Analyses may be contrastive, focusing on cross-disciplinary, cross-genre, and cross-linguistic/cross-cultural features. Implications of the research findings for pedagogy and professional practice may also be briefly discussed in terms of text analysis and written discourse.
