Student Travel Awards

The deadline for application and recommendations for AAAL's Graduate Student Travel Awards is Friday, February 1 at 5:00 pm eastern time.

Purpose: Purpose: To help support travel (and some expenses) of 6 graduate student members of AAAL to the annual conference (www.aaal.org/aaal2008).

Eligibility: Students who are members of AAAL at the time of application, are in a university Master’s or Ph.D. program in applied linguistics or a related field, and have either a paper or poster session accepted for presentation at the upcoming conference are eligible.

Amount: A maximum of 6 awards will be given: $800.00 each for up to four Ph.D. student awards and up to two Master's student awards. In addition, the awards include the waiving of conference registration fees. Two of the six awards - the ETS Graduate Student Travel Scholarship and the Multilingual Matters Graduate Student Travel Scholarship - will be awarded to the two top-ranked Ph.D. student applicants.

Application Procedure:

Applications must include the following information:

  • Your institution and program of study;
  • Your recent/current contributions to the field of applied linguistics;
  • Your career plans after completion of degree program;
  • Your current financial situation, including your university's contribution to conference travel;
  • How conference attendance will benefit you and others;
  • A biographical statement; and
  • Contact information.

(Please limit your responses to 1-3 clear and concise paragraphs per category)

Applicants should also provide the name of a current professor who has agreed to provide a recommendation when contacted by AAAL (by February 1). That letter should state the professor's estimation of the applicant's:

  • academic work and promise in the field of applied linguistics;
  • personal attributes relevant to a career in applied linguistics; and
  • level of need for financial assistance.

NOTE: An email notification will be sent to your professor requesting a recommendation for your application. It is your responsibility to notify your professor that you have selected them to provide a recommendation. It is also your responsibility to follow up with your professor to ensure that they submit their recommendation prior to the deadline.
